What Are Enhanced Conversions for Web?Enhanced Conversions for Web are an additional measurement feature for Google Ads conversion tracking.
They do not replace your existing Google Ads conversion tracking. Instead, they supplement it with first-party customer data collected during a conversion, such as:
- Email address
- Phone number
- First and last name
- Home address
Before this information is sent to Google, the customer data used for matching is normalized and securely hashed using SHA-256.
Google can then use the hashed data to match the converting customer with signed-in Google accounts and attribute the conversion to relevant ad interactions.
For example, imagine that someone clicks a Google ad, visits your website, and later completes a purchase using their email address.
With standard conversion tracking, Google primarily relies on the information available through the user's browser and the existing tagging setup to connect that purchase with the previous ad interaction.
With Enhanced Conversions enabled, the conversion tag can also send a hashed version of the customer's email address to Google. Google can use this additional signal to improve the accuracy of conversion attribution when a match is available.
The process can be summarized as:

How to Implement Enhanced Conversions for WebBefore implementing Enhanced Conversions, standard Google Ads conversion tracking should already be working correctly.
Enhanced Conversions supplement the existing conversion measurement setup; they are not a substitute for a correctly configured conversion action and conversion tag.
Google currently supports collecting user-provided data through website tagging and other supported connections. For a typical website implementation, Google Tag Manager or the Google tag is usually the most relevant approach.
If your website already uses Google Tag Manager, GTM is generally the most practical option because Enhanced Conversions can be integrated into the existing tagging setup.
Step 1: Identify the Customer Data Available at ConversionFirst, determine which first-party customer data is available when a conversion occurs.
For an ecommerce purchase, for example, you may have access to:
- Email
- Phone number
- First name
- Last name
- Street address
- City
- Region
- Postal code
- Country
You do not necessarily need all of these fields.
Email is generally the most useful identifier. Google also supports a complete name and address combination. A phone number can be provided as an additional identifier but should not be used by itself for this implementation.
The exact implementation depends on your website and how customer information is exposed to the tracking layer.
Step 2: Make Customer Data Available to Your Tagging SetupThe required customer information needs to be accessible when the conversion is recorded.
